* Make sure that you research the breed thoroughly before you buy a puppy or dog, never make an impulse purchase and buy the first puppy from the first breeder you find.

* Be honest with the breeder about what you’re looking for when you go to see the puppies or dogs, if you are looking for a show dog then don’t tell the breeder you want a pet because you think this will cost you less. A responsible breeder will sell their French bulldogs as pets with limited registration papers and you will not be able to show your dog without full papers.

* If you buy a frenchie as a pet, then you probably wont be able to show it, the breeder will sell their frenchies as pets if they know the puppy wont meet the strict requirements needed for showing.

* Even if you purchase a dog or puppy for show there is no guarantee that you will be successful, not every show dog has the superior qualities which are needed to win major prizes at the top shows.

* Don’t buy a show dog just for the sake of it, if all you want is a companion then buy a puppy for a pet, they might not meet the exact standards required of the breed but if you bought your puppy from a reputable breeder who does breed show dogs then your companion will be pretty close to meeting the requirements without costing you an arm and leg.

* Make sure that you get yourself a copy of the breed standard and also equip yourself with the knowledge of the problems know to this specific breed.

* If you wish to purchase a dog for showing then attend as many shows as possible before you go looking for a puppy, make sure you know the breed and the colours that are required for showing.

* Even if you don’t intend to show your frenchie it doesn’t hurt to get acquainted with the breed’s standard before you choose your puppy, what better way to learn about the breed than from those who have been breeding and showing frenchies for years.

* Contact and view puppies from as many different breeders as you can before making your final choice.

* Makes sure you take a list with all the questions you want to ask the breeder, a reputable breeder will only be too happy to answer all your questions, they should also ask some questions of you too.

* A breeder who isn’t affiliated with a dog club is no worse than those who are, their puppies and dogs can be just as worthy of the show ring than those belonging to a club.

* Don’t be taken in by breeders who claim their dogs are show worthy but who don’t actually show them, a good breeder will show their dogs and have proof with certificates and trophies of what their dogs are actually capable of. The breeder who claims their dogs are champions without having the proof and who makes the excuse of not having time to show their dogs should be avoided especially if you do want to show the puppy.

* Look for a breeder who has several years of experience in breeding French bulldogs.

* Ask how many litters a year the breeder has and be wary of those who claim they always have litters available, the good breeder will only breed a few litters per year, those who say they always have litters haven’t got the best interests of the dogs at heart only their pockets.

* Does the breeder give you registration papers; health records and micro chip the puppies. A reputable breeder will give you the puppy’s pedigree records and health records. Most breeders know have a micro chip inserted into the puppy very early on, this helps to locate dogs that are lost or stolen.

Any tips for buying a laborador puppy?

We're buying a new home and have several outside dogs but would like to get an inside dog too. We've decided we would like to get a chocolate lab pup. Any tips for buying? Things I should ask a breeder? Tips for training or books or articles that will help me with the training process? Or, just any tips about labs in general from anyone who has had them would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Answer:
Labs are a really popular breed and breeding them is running amuck in the back yard breeder variety. Be very careful about the breeder you choose to buy a puppy from. Make sure they are breeding dogs which have been properly tested and cleared of things such as hip dysplasia--this one in particular is VERY common to labs unfortunately. If the breeder isn't doing OFA or PennHip, don't buy from them and find a different one. A good place to find a good breeder is to seek out the parent club and get some referrals. Check out a few different breeders. Good breeders will be willing to help you out later down the line well after puppy goes home with you. Check out this link on akc.org about ethical breeding practices. I would personally want my breeder to adhere to these guidelines, or I wouldn't buy from them. http://www.akc.org/breeders/resp_breeding/Articles/breeder.cfm

Any tips for a dog that HATES other dogs?

My 2 yr old dog absolutly HATES other dogs for no reason. When I take him for walks , if he sees another dog he goes wild! If he could he would attack the dog. We even bought a shock training collar and it works for basic things like drop it but when he sees another dog the shock wont even work. Any training tips?

Answer:
Is your dog neutered? If he is start paying attention mine hate unneutered males especially larger breeds. Turn him in a circle to by walking in front and around him to distract him don't yell or get tense he will sense your stress and feed off of it. None of my dogs and only one foster likes other dogs and we are surviving even though they all hate each other and none are crated.

Anyone have any tips for keeping a dog from shedding so much?

I have a 1 year old Jack Russell Terrier and she sheds like no dog I've ever seen. There is white hair all over the place. I bought her a body suit that minimizes some of the problem but she hates wearing it. Any tips?

Answer:
I have two Labs they get vacumed every day and brushed twice every day. The brushing helps cut down on their hair being all over my stuff. Grooming every day helps alot. I also switched their diets to higher protein and more fish oils. They get coat supplements high in Omega 3 & 6 that has helped cut their shedding by 50%.

tips on making my own dog door?

I already have a dog door installed but It needs replaced and doesn't seem to be a good quality. I would just like to get my own instead of replacing it all the time. What tips do you guys have I want to do it myself not buy a more expensive one.

Answer:
Frame the inside of the door with wood. Then buy some plastic or make a screen door yourself, and screw it to the top of the wood frame. I looked on DIY and they only had how to install a store bought one. I would think if you asked Home Depot they'd help you get all the material and give you a rough idea on how to make one that will last for a longer time.

Any tips on litter-box training a dog? I bought him the dog litter box, but he just doesn't get it. Help!

He is a five year old pug, and I need to litterbox train him. He has never had one accident and I've had him about a week and a half, he only needs to go out 2-3 times a day, but my apartment complex requires he go in a dog-litter box instead of outside on the grass. How can I help him go potty in the box?

Answer:
I use litter boxes, Purina second nature litter. You will have to train him just as you did to go outside. Place him in the box, tell him potty. and keep repeating the procedure. it would help if you placed some grass on top of the litter, so that would feel more like what he is used to outside, till he learns to use the box. Try soaking some of his urine in a paper towel from where he has been going and rub the towel on the litter, also get some of his poop and place in the litter so that he can see and smell these. All the best to you. It can be done

Buying a puppy and need tips?

I am going to be buying a puppy and i would like some tips to avoid bad things from happening. This is the first time i am buying one so i am trying not to get into troble with my mom because of it. She is not usally like this about things like this, but her friends say that they end up regreting getting the dogs because of little problems so please give only good advise that can be usefull in any way for correcting bad behaviors.(for dogs only)

Answer:
Get your puppy from a reputable breeder and make sure you'll be able to see at least one of the parents. There is NOTHING wrong with crate training a dog. All of mine have been crate trained and I haven't had any problems with mine. However, if you are getting a toy breed, you may want to consider pad or litter box training it because many small breeds will not want to go potty outside when the weather is bad. Make sure that your dog has PLENTY of chew toys to keep it occupied when your not at home, and keep it in the crate, or confined to a certain area until it gains your trust that it won't tear up the house, ext. I give my dogs rawhide bones, kong toys with treats and/ or peanut butter inside to keep them occupied. Let your puppy out ever half our or so to go potty and stay out there for at least 5 minutes because many dogs will not completely empty their bladder just one time. EXERCISE your dog! Take it on walks, play with it outside, ext. Lack of exercise, and lack of stimulation, often times will cause a dog to be destructive. If you adopt a dog from the animal shelter, you might want to be careful since this will be your first dog and your mom isn't absolutly thrilled about this. I am NOT against shelter dogs at all, but with adults you don't know their background and how they will react, or what habits they have. If you are going with a pure breed, Labs and Golden Retreivers make great first dogs. Australian Cattle Dogs are also great dogs, I have bred and raised them for over 15 years. However, they need a good amount of exercise and they need to be kept occupied when they are left alone until they are housebroken. They do make great outdoor dogs as well. Do your research on your breeds, find a breeder, and also ask them for any training tips, ext. Good luck.
