Your dog is your companion who will give you many years of love, friendship and loyalty in exchange for loving care, safe shelter, clean water and decent food. They also rely on you to provide them with health care when they are ill and regular exercise and grooming to help keep them fit and healthy. Listed below are 10 essentials for keeping your dog fit and healthy for many years to come:

1. make sure that you give your dog a collar and that it includes an identity tag with your name and telephone number on it, or even better have an electronic tag fitted just under your dogs skin, this makes it easy to track your dog should it get lost or stolen.

2. make sure you follow all the local laws and regulations regarding licensing for your dog and that they have the correct vaccinations when they should.

3. When on public property keep your dog on a lead, you should always keep your dog under strict control at all times when out and about. Never let your dog go wandering off alone and make sure they cannot get off your property without you. When you are walking keep your dog on its lead by your side until you come to an area away from cars, even then your dog should be well behaved and always do as its told the minute you tell it.

4. Make sure your dog has proper accommodation; if you keep your dog outside in a kennel make sure it’s the correct size for the breed of dog and that you spend a decent amount of time with it. Dogs crave companionship and don’t like to be left all day alone or tied up in a small pen, make sure you can devote the time needed to take care of a pet before you take on the responsibility.

5. take your dog to the vets regularly, makes sure that you take your dog to see the vet on a regular basis, this way illness can be caught before it shows and always make sure your dog has the necessary vaccinations when needed.

6. spay or neuter your dog, dogs that have this surgery are known to live longer, be healthier and have less behaviour problems.

7. give your dog a healthy balanced diet with plenty of clean fresh drinking water available at all times, if your dog puts on too much weight then seek the advice of your vet before restricting their diet.

8. take your dog to obedience classes, this not only makes your life a lot easier but also that of your dog, a well behaved dog who does as they are told will be welcome at a lot more places than ones which just please themselves.

9. Give your dog the exercise that they need without over doing it, two walks for roughly 15 minutes is adequate enough for most breeds providing they can get outside in the garden throughout the day. Smaller breeds may not even need this much exercise, care should of course be taken with very young puppy’s as their little legs may tire easily.

10. Be patient with your dog, sometimes your companion may not understand what is required of them and you may have to repeat or tell them in a different way what you want them to do. Dogs aren’t mind readers and cannot understand anything and everything you ask of them so a little patience on your part can go a long way.

Do you have any useful tips in caring for your dog that no one knows?

Answer:
I do not know if anyone else knows them but I am sure they do, For my dogs when they are teething and even now when it is hot I freeze wet cloths or socks and give them to the dogs especially really helps for teething. Proboitics or plain yogurt are excellent for your dgos stomach and canned pumpkin with no sugar is great to mix with your dogs food when they are on a doet. It fiils them up. There are slo natural sprays you can use for dog instead of the harsh flea treatments. I use Neem"Protect" Spray and shampoo by Ark Naturals. You can get it on your skin and no problems it is better than putting poision on my dogs. I have used it for 2 years and not one flea. I also vacumme my dogs helps with shedding.

Any tips for caring for two dogs?

We currently have a 3 year old black lab and are thinking about adopting a 4 year old black lab. We've never had two dogs at once before. We have raised our lab since he was 7 weeks. This will also be our first experience with adopting an older dog. Anyone have any tips? I'm really concerned about the following areas: 1) How can I make the adopted dog feel at home? 2) How should I feed them? In seperate rooms? 3) Should I be sure to play with them individually on a daily basis? 4) Do they need seperate time outside? 5) How can I make my current dog feel like he's not being replaced? Thanks for the help!

Answer:
This is something our household has gotten used to doing in the last few years. People sometimes comment to me that it must be very hard to care for seven dogs. To be truthful, we stopped noticing any difference at three dogs. There really isn't that much difference. When bringing a new member of the pack into the household, the first meeting should be on neutral ground. You may want to take your dog to the new dog and meet in the shelter yard, so no one has an excuse to get territorial. This will also give you an idea how social both these animals are going to be together. The shelter probably won't adopt a dog to you that doesn't get along with your dog. When you get the new dog home, there are some rather important things to remember. First, don't shower the new dog with attention. In the eyes of the old dog, this new member is at the very bottom the pack, just above pond scum, and if you tip the scales, you may see aggression from your old dog as he tries to hold his position in the family. Feed the new dog last, don't let the new dog sleep on the bed, DON'T leave them alone in the house together until you can trust them. Your old dog may pout-just ignore it and treat him just like usual. He will get curious and begin to appreciate the company. This should only take a few days. There may be some quarrels-don't be surprised by this. You should always correct any kind of aggression, especially if your old dog starts to protect his food, but sometimes you will have to step back and let the two dogs sort it out. Once the heirarchy of the pack has been determined and agreed upon by your two dogs, everything will be fine. Don't forget to feed and reward in pack order-this is very important to dogs, and if you don't follow this, there will again be confusion as to which place they hold in the house. Once you get everything settled, you will be amazed at how easy it all is. Good luck and enjoy!

i need tips on taking care of a small breed dog in an apartment?

i am very interested in getting a dog and i want to know tips on taking care of it. and what the price of a dog/puppy range from. and what's the easiest breed of dog to take care of in an apartment. i see this happen on youtube plenty of time how do i train my dog to use the toilet

Answer:
a good website to check out is www.dogbreedinfo.com. you can select a category (apartment dogs) and there will be a list of breeds that would do well in an apartment setting, complete with any other info you need on any breed. i live in an apartment, and i have a whippet. i think that they make perfect apartment dogs, because they are quiet, clean, smart, and fun. whippets are extremely fast and athletic, but their energy only comes in short bursts...this means that as long as you take them out 1-2 times a day for some exercise, they will pretty much be couch potatoes when back at home. they are considered to be one of the quietest breeds. they are extremely clean by nature, and don't require much grooming. all i have to do is give mine a bath when he gets really dirty, like after a day at the beach. because they are so clean, they are easy to potty train. crate-training works really well with whippets. Before I brought mine home, our breeder said that he was 100% doggy-door trained at 6 weeks. At my apt, since we don't have a doggy door for him to outside and "go", he'll go stand by the door asking to be taken out. they are generally really mellow and low-key, however, these dogs (like most breeds) need companionship, and do not like to be left alone for too long. they are really easy to take care of, as long as you are responsible. feed him twice a day, don't leave food out, take him out to potty every few hours and shortly after he eats. take him out for exercise and play, and he'll be a couch potato when you come back home. as far as price, it depends on where you get him. whippets are somewhat hard to come by, and are not usually found at shelters. you can find a reputable breeder (careful not to buy from backyard breeders or puppy mills. make sure they are real breeders who love their dogs.) they will usually make you fill out a questionaire and approve of you first before selling to you, but that is a good sign that they are a good breeder. our breeder required a home-check too, where she visited our apartment before approving us. she really cared about the well being of her pups, and wanted to make sure that we would provide a good forever home for him. breeders charge usually somewhere between 0-1000. whatever breed you choose, remember that all dogs need plenty of exercise to be calm and relaxed at home. just make sure to do your research, and find the breed that best fits you and your lifestyle. good luck, and have fun!

I need to know how to make the best dog care ever. Tips?

Colors on my flyers. Where should I put them. Stuff like that.

Answer:
Bright colors stand out. Use a yellow or bright pink and a thick black font. You should put these up at local places where they have bulletin boards. Some gas stations, grocery stores, and post offices have places to do this. Make sure you put them in places where a lot of people go and you feel you could get a lot of attention to your flyers. Good luck.

We recently adopted a 3-year old Labrador Retriever/Japanese Spitz hybrid. Any tips for caring and grooming?

My family adopted Maggie, a neglected 3 year old Labrador Retriever/Japanese Spitz mix. We want to give her the best care we can. Can anyone suggest useful websites where we can find extra info about caring for a dog of this type, like grooming tips, which type of dogfood to buy, and how to manage fur shedding. Thanks!

Answer:
The best food nutritionally is Nutro Choice. We feed large breed lamb & rice to our rescue lab x dalmation and within 2 days his fur became shiney and he stopped shedding so much and he no longer had dandruff. As for caring, give ger love and discipline - gentle discipline, but she still needs ro realise her place in the pack. Feed her twice a day, once after you have eaten breakfast and again after you have eaten dinner. If she is troubled, you may find the services of an animal behaviourist to be of help, or you can probably get advice from the RSPCA for free. Anyway, well done you on giving Maggie a much needed loving home.

Great tips on caring for your dog???

rescue member.......I know how to care for my dog.......just posted this question, to help other people out there that don't know how to care for their dog....duhhhh....... maybe u should be a little kinder when answering questions, i don't appreciate your attitude/ Any thing interesting that you think dog owners should know!!?! this is to help other people out there.

Answer:
Learning dog behavior and understanding them. We force our ways on them and sometimes to no success. It really helps to understand them by learning their natural instincts and how to communicate with them. Feed the holistic foods and learn what the ingredients mean, the Dog Food Project is an excellent website to learn from. Brush and walk them daily. Make time for them, if you are going to have a dog mahe sure you are upto the full repsonsibilty. Research their breed and know common diseases for the breed and what the breed is all about.Way too many people gets dogs based on looks or a dog they saw on TV and rdo not know anything baout the breed. So many dogs lose their homes because their owner get them based on their looks and not that the breed is goof for them.
